A Day in the LIfe

So how about a Day in the Life post today?

Technically I'm writing this on Monday to be published on Tuesday.  So if the weather tomorrow isn't as beautiful tomorrow as it is today, I don't want you to be confused.  This is what I did today (Monday) not tomorrow (Tuesday) when y'all will read this.   Oh dear, anyway ...

1. Outside my window ... it is just gorgeous.  Yes, it is mid-December and the weather today is just lovely. A little too cool to put my top down but still beautiful.  D always says that I need to clarify that statement so okay ... putting my top down means the top down on my convertible.  Not really like my top as in my clothes.  Maybe only a man would think of that.  Ha!
So far today I've done the radio show and took a little shopping trip to Sims Pottery to pick up scarves for the New Beginnings ladies' Christmas bags.  We are going up tomorrow (Tuesday) night for their annual Christmas party.  This is a highlight of my Christmas season.
After that I went to Reeves Wholesale to pick up a few things and then to the alteration shop.  Usually I have the dry cleaners do our alterations but this seemed a little complicated.  Last Saturday, Mother wanted to go to the Belk before we went to the drug store, grocery store, etc.  As she was looking for a new necklace (it needed to be long, everything she has is short and with some of her blazers and sweaters she just needs a long necklace but not too long because then it would get in her way and get hung on everything.  So she would need to wear a blazer like she wants to wear with it and go to Belk and try on the various options.  She thought she might want pearls because that would go with just everything but not real pearls, the fake pearls that look like real pearls.  She has real pearls but they're short and she doesn't want to buy anymore real ones).  So now you know where the over-explaining gene may have come from.  :)
So we went to Belk with the other 10,287 people who were Christmas shopping.  I really needed to get a couple of gifts so going to Belk was actually fine with me.   After I had purchased the two gifts I needed, Mother was still in the jewelry department so I thought I would just walk around.  I found myself at the sale rack and by sale rack, I mean the one where it says "50% off, take an extra 40% off."  Well, they might as well just give it to me.  And there it was ... just the cutest top - black with white polka dots ... and it was kinda a sweatshirt fabric but in a dressier way ... and it was super comfy.  However, it had a band at the bottom.  I really do not like anything that has a band at the bottom.  So, I had the bright idea to have the super-smart alteration lady take the band off.  And given what I paid for it, I felt like I could justify the alteration costs.  So that is why I was at the alteration shop today.
After that I called G to see what he was doing because it was around lunch time and I thought he might want to go.  He was headed to Atlanta to follow up about a job (big prayers for this! - hopefully more later) but he didn't have to be there until mid-afternoon so he would love to go with his momma to lunch.  I was having a major hankering for Little Italy's garden salad (the best!) and piece of pizza lunch special.  G was good with that so I was just pleased as I could be that we had the spur-of-the-moment opportunity to chat over salad and pizza.
After that I came home to pick up a Red Velvet Peppermint Pound Cake that I had made and took it to the staff at The Times.  These folks have been super kind to me over the past year allowing me to live my dream of writing and sharing recipes so the least I could do was make them one of my signature Christmas cakes.
So now, I'm home.  After this, I'll make two recipes for the blog/radio show next week and then cook supper.  And speaking of the paper, in between I've got to start working on next week's article.  I have no idea what that's going to look like so I might ought to give that some thought.

2. I'm watching ... There are two new shoes this season that we just love.  Of course, we still watch Castle, Dancing with the Stars, Scandal, Duck Dynasty, Nashville, Shark Tank ... all of regular favorites but we are really liking the Goldbergs and Madame Secretary.  If you lived through the 80s and especially if you raised your children in the 80s, you will love The Goldbergs.  Interestingly, the show is based on the writers family and experiences.  I don't know how many times we've been watching it and D has said to me, "didn't you have a sweater like that?"  We literally laugh out loud every time we watch it.
And of course, for my politics-loving husband, Madame Secretary is a sure winner.  I actually really like it, too.  It follows the professional and personal life of the US Secretary of State, played by Tea Leoni.  Very interesting from the viewpoint - is this what the real Secretary of State does everyday? and then how she balances a home, husband and 3 children.  Plus she's involved in a murder investigation of the former Secretary of State. That's a surprise, I know.

3.  I'm reading ... well, this time of year, I'm a sucker for Christmas fiction.  So I just downloaded on my Kindle Paperwhite "Candlelight Christmas" by Susan Wiggs and "Tis the Season" by Robyn Carr.  I'm not far enough into either one of them to give you a review.  I also just downloaded, based on a recommendation of a friend, "The Power of a Woman's Words" by Sharon Jaynes.  I figure this one would be a good one for me as I'm constantly spewing words everywhere.

4.  I'm wearing ... I'm totally obsessed right now with a grey fur vest that I got at Target a couple of weeks ago.  I think I've worn it about 8 times since I got it.  It's so comfortable.  What do you think?

I've worn it with skirts, leggings, jeans, black pants ... with a scarf, with a statement necklace ... with a grey chambray shirt, grey turtleneck, black blouse, black tunic, and my Riley Clay "He is Enough" shirt, just to name a few.  This is my favorite piece of clothing right now.
Today I have it on with grey leggings, grey/black leopard print flats, the grey chambray shirt, a grey/black plaid scarf and a black tunic.

5.  I am thinking ... about Christmas.  How I'm doing "Christmas-lite" this year and really enjoying it.  Believe it or not, the only decorating I have done is my tree.  That's it.  Can you believe it?  Next year, I'm sure I'll be back in full force but for this "season," I'm streamlining.

6.  I'm working on ... the January Bridal Show, recipes for January and my column for next week.  I had just the best meeting with the sweetest bride and her mother last Saturday morning.  She's not getting married until next May ( I now have 3 weddings in May) but it was so fun to talk about all of her plans.

7.  I'm cooking .... about a dozen desserts this week.  These desserts are going about 10 different places.  Thank goodness none of them are staying here with me.

8.  I'm looking forward to ... Wednesday evening when my family comes together for the Christmas Communion Service at church.  It is hands down my favorite event of the season.  I'm also looking forward to the John Berry concert and a great evening with some dear friends on Thursday;  to this weekend in Tennessee with D's family; to Christmas morning and to January 3rd (when we'll leave for the beach).

So that's what's in my head for today.  What a random group of thoughts.  :)

Happy Tuesday!

A Day in the Life

It has been a very loonngg time since I've done a Day in the Life post so here goes:

1.  Outside my window ...it is sunny and 70 degrees.  Granted it's 8:00 in the morning but still it is August 5th and things could be much different.  The heat and humidity have been bearable this summer and for that this girl is thankful.   I've already been to walk 2 1/2 miles this morning.  Forcing myself out of bed at 6:00 everyday to meet some friends to walk at 6:30 has proven to be both a challenge (I hate to get up early) and a great boost for both my mind and body.

2.  I am watching ... Junk Gypsies and Flip or Flop.  I record both of these on the DVR and then watch in marathon fashion.   The Junk Gypsies are just the bomb.  If you aren't familiar, they are two sisters, Amie and Jolie from Round Top, Texas who several years ago started turning junk into treasure, mostly home decor items.  They quickly added t-shirts, jewelry, boots, hats, etc.  They even have a line with Pottery Barn now.  Their tv show (on the Great American Country channel) follows their lives whether they are designing an airstream for Dierks Bentley, a t-shirt for Sadie Robertson or the line for Pottery Barn.  These girls are creative and smart and to me, their story is just the epitome of the American Dream.  They started with some  junk and their parents' support and with a lot of hard work, have turned it into an extremely successful business.
Then, there is Flip or Flip on HGTV.  It follows Tarek and Christina and their ventures through the real estate world of flipping foreclosures.  Believe me, they do trash to treasure transformations as well.  It's just amazing how they breath new life into houses you think might just be better bull-dozed.

3.  I am reading ... "Let's all be Brave" by Annie Downs.  This is a great book about doing things that require courage.  Doing the next brave thing.   I think God must be speaking to me about this.   It seems to be a recurring theme through books and His Word.

4.  I am listening to ... actually not much.  I take listening to music in seasons.  Sometimes, I listen to music all the time and then, I'll have times when I like silence.  Right now, I like silence.

5.  I am wearing ...to be honest, at this moment I'm still wearing my exercise clothes.  Black knit capris and a Southern Anchor shirt.  If you don't know about Southern Anchor, you should.  This very cool company was started by a 16 year old from Gainesville, Sam Simpson.  In a very short time, Southern Anchor has had great success.  Again, a great example of what hard work, intelligence and a great idea/product will get you.

6.  I am thinking ... about my good friends who lost their son.  I honestly cannot get them off of my mind and heart.  Praying without ceasing for this precious family.

7.  I am working on ...a lot.  Birthday celebrations, weddings, speaking engagements, newspaper articles, a cooking party menu.  There are a bunch of great things going on from now until December.  I'm trying to not be overwhelmed but to prepare effectively for all of these projects.

8.  I am cooking ... recipes for fall for the CwC blog, which is hands down my favorite time to cook.    I'm working on soups, stews, pumpkin recipes, and apple recipes.  Yum!

9.  I am on the hunt for ..  a new light fixture to go over my island in my kitchen.  I would like a lantern-type fixture to replace the pot-rack type fixture that is there now.  I can't find just the right one for this spot.

10. I am looking forward to ... when I can take off my bra tonight and put my gown on.  Just keepin' it real.

Happy Tuesday!

A Day in the Life

Where to begin . . .

Let's just jump right back into the bloggin' game with a little Day in the Life.  How 'bout it?
1. Outside my window . . . it is gorgeous!  Access North GA is telling me it's 83 degrees and I can see out my window that it's sunny.  So, basically, perfect.
2.  I am watching . . . oh dear, you are not going to believe this, but I am watching this season's "Bachelorette."  This is the first time that I've watched an entire season without becoming disgusted, disgruntled or disoriented (meaning my head starts to spin when they all start fussing and fighting) and then jumped ship before the Love Boat sailed.    But I love, love Emily who is after all, from south of the Mason Dixon line.  She seems to be on the up and up and keeping it classy.  Let's hope that continues because when it becomes trashing instead of classy, I'm a goner.  And . . . did anyone watch the return of "Dallas" last week?  I don't know how I missed it but I did.  I'll have to go back and HuLu it because I have to see the first episode.  Believe me, I now have my DVR set and even a reminder on my phone.  I can't wait to see Larry Hagman ( and his eyebrows), Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray at South Fork again.  Oh, how I loved "Dallas" back in the day.  I really hope this return doesn't disappoint.
3.  I'm listening to . . . the new Kenny Chesney album. It just downloaded it today so I'm ill-prepared to give you a review. By the way, does anyone else think it's weird that they still call it an album on itunes?     You know, D and I are off to see Mr. Chesney and his buddy, Tim McGraw this weekend in Charlotte for the Brothers of the Sun concert.  I can hardly wait.  This is going to be so much fun.    D and I are just so weird . . . we are actually going to two concerts this weekend.  Saturday night we'll be in Hiawassee to see the man himself, Mr. Vince Gill.   Some of you are probably remembering that I saw Vince at Christmas at the Fox.  Well, that was fabulous;  however, it was all Christmas music and it was with his wife, Amy Grant.  That was all well and good but I just wanted to see Vince in his element.  Thank you very much.  So, D and I will travel up to the mountains this Saturday; then head to Charlotte on Sunday.  WooHoo!
4.  I am reading . . . as always, lots of different things.  For Bible study, I'm reading the books of Ezra and Nehemiah.  The study is actually specifically about Nehemiah but nothing in the Bible is stand alone.  You have to know the context so do to that you need to read what has happened up to that point.  I love the Old Testament.  It is so rich and wonderful.  Loving these books!  I'm also reading the "Happiness Project" which is an interesting concept.  Not really sure how I feel about it yet.  Two of my favorite authors just released new books:  "Spring Fever" by Mary Kay Andrews and "Porch Lights" by Dorothea Benton Frank.  I actually pre-ordered them and have finished both.  They are great reads for your beach bag if you're needing such.
5.  What I'm wearing . . . white linen pants, a white tank, a taupe crocheted (maybe?) long top.  This may be the most comfortable outfit I own.  The pants are wide and flowy which I love.  The wider and flowier, the better I like it.
6.  What I'm thinking . . . wow, that's a loaded one.  I'm thinking I need to write this blog on a regular basis again because my sweet girl really misses it.  And if she misses it, I need to do it.  I'm thinking I need to carve out some time to organize my pictures.  I'm thinking I need to clean my house.  I'm thinking I need to do something nice for a friend who is struggling.  I'm thinking I need to look at my calendar and do some planning for the fall.  I'm thinking I should make a list of all of this before I forget it.
7.  What I'm doing after this . . . going to work-out.  I haven't missed a day of exercising in two weeks.  So far, so good.  I'm going to the Family Life Center to get on the elliptical.  It's not really that bad and I sure am glad I did it when I'm done.
8.  What I'm cooking for supper . . . after the workout, it's steaks on the grill, bacon-wrapped asparagus and a great new dish using the fresh produce that is coming in from my mother-in-law's garden.  Here's the recipe if you're interested:

Summer Vegetable Bake:
Ingredients:

1 medium onion, chopped

1 teaspoon minced garlic

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 medium zucchini, thinly sliced

1 medium yellow squash, thinly sliced

1 potato, thinly sliced

 1 tomato, thinly sliced

1 teaspoon dried thyme

Salt and pepper to taste

1 cup shredded Italian cheese

Directions:

1.       Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

2.       Sauté onion and garlic in a skillet with olive oil until softened (about five minutes).

3.       Spray the inside of an 8x8 square or round baking dish with non-stick spray. Spread the softened onion and garlic in the bottom of the dish.

4.       Place the thinly sliced vegetables in the baking dish vertically, in an alternating pattern. Sprinkle generously with salt, pepper, and thyme.

5.        Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil, top with cheese and bake for another 15-20 minutes or until the cheese is golden brown.

So, there you have it.   A day in the life of this ordinary girl who loves her ordinary life.

A Day in the Life

I thought I would go back and see when the last time I wrote one of these "Day in the Life" posts and would you believe it was last November? Well, it's high time we did this again.

1. Outside my window . . . I'm at the office typing this so I'm not absolutely sure what the weather is like outside right now but when I came awhile ago it was overcast and my iphone weather app says is 69 degrees. Loverly to me.

Oh, speaking of the iphone, guess who walked right into that AT&T store and ordered herself a brand new iphone 4S. I've been due for an upgrade since February but the new iphone rumors had been swirling and I thought I might wait for the new iphone 5. Well, when that got the no-go, I just decided to get the new 4S. When I ordered it a week ago, they said it would be delivered to the house in 14 to 21 days. E on the other hand, ordered on line, and hers should arrive tomorrow. Go figure. Doggone if I'd known that I would have just saved myself the time and gas and stayed home and ordered on the world wide web. But I told her last night that I'm really kinda glad that she is getting hers before I am because that way she'll know how to work it by the time I get mine. Really helps this old woman's learning curve when your precious daughter can just tell you how to work stuff.

2. I am reading . . . a bunch of different things. Two new books that I just ordered for my Kindle are Max Lucado's "God's Story, Your Story" and "Untangling Christmas." My sweet sis-in-law sent me an email to tell me that Max's book was free (as in costs 0) on Amazon for 24 hours. Well, because I love Max Lucado and I love free, I quickly got this downloaded. Just started reading it and it's great so far. I haven't started "Untangling Christmas" so I'll have to let you know. Our couples Bible study group (and our whole church) is reading "If God is Good" by Randy Alcorn. Great day, this one can quickly go deep and be way over my head. But it definitely gives me pause to think about some subjects I've never thought about before and that's always good. And of course, my chronological Bible. Looks like I might be about two weeks after the end of year finishing this but that's okay. I need to give myself permission and be okay to read the Bible through in one year and two weeks.

3. I am watching . . . well, you know we discussed tv a few days back and I was just super excited about the return of the sit-com for television, i.e. no more reality shows. I've checked out a few of these sit-coms and have been disappointed. It seems there is a central theme of sex in most of them that frankly is inappropriate and offensive. One that I do like although it's not a sit-com is Charlies Angels. On a purely girly level, I love these girls clothes, shoes and hair styles. That may be the best part although the plots have been decent. Oh and because I believe in full disclosure, I have been sneaking a peek at Dancing with the Stars. Yes, I know, I vowed not to watch but J.R. Martinez just won my heart. And last night was the best results show ever because Blake Shelton was on there singing the "Footloose" song from the new movie by the same name. And just guess who was back on the dance floor cuttin a rug? Yes that would be our girl Julianne. She's also the lead female in the new "Footloose" movie. Which leads me to my next point.

4. Movies I want to see . . . obviously the new "Footloose." I have watched all the trailers, been on the website, and read the background about this movie. First of all, "Footloose" was one of my favorites back in the day. Love Kenny Loggins and Kevin Bacon. So as soon as I heard this movie was about to cut loose (sorry), I had to know all about it. And did you know that the whole movie was filmed in Georgia - Atlanta, Covington, Senoia and Acworth. To me, this is the best dance movie of all time. I know I know, Dirty Dancing and Momma Mia were good too.
Second, I've been wanting to see "Courageous." Everyone says it's awesome.

5. What I'm wearing . . . to be honest, I'm a little overdressed for the office today. I'm wearing a black jacket, black tank and black pants. Wow - that couldn't be more boring could it? Well, I did add some pizzazz with jewelry. D and I are going to that event in Atlanta tonight and I have no idea what the dress code is so I'm playing it safe with this ensemble.
I'm cracking up reading what I wrote in that last Day in the Life post from last November. I wrote in this section about my love for boots, particular the bootie. Well, some things never change. What is it about boots/booties that I love so much? I've got to tell you a little secret. I've been wanting a leopard print pair of booties for well over a year. I've searched the stores and the internet with no avail. Well . . . yesterday I was reading a fashion blog (imagine that) and she mentioned something about some Aeorsole riding boots. They were really cute so I followed the link to these boots and low and behold sitting right next to these riding boots were, you guessed it, leopard print booties and they're Aeorsoles. So that means they're comfy too, right? I ordered those in a big hurry and they should be at my front door in a few days. What if they come the same day as my iphone? That truly will be too much to take.

6. What I'm listening to . . . you probably aren't going to believe this and think you're reading somebody elses blog but I am listening to more and more talk radio. Now, I don't get too political around here but I am super interested in this upcoming election and super intrigued by Herman Cain and his 9-9-9 plan for America. So, go figure. But you know there is only so much of that a girl can take so I plug in Luke Bryan's new CD "Tailgates and Tan Lines." It's really good but I'm a country music nerd.

7. What I'm thinking about . . . that's a loaded topic. There's so much going on around this pea brain that some days I think it might explode. But besides the obvious upcoming weddings and assorted business ventures, when my thoughts go deep, I'm pondering one of our memory verses for our study at church. Boy oh boy this spoke volumes to me.

"God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. " 2 Corinthians 5:21

God made Jesus for the purpose of taking on our sin. That's right - my sin and your sin. He took it all. Paid the price. Secured the debt. For us.
So that we might become the righteousness of God. So that we can become through His goodness, in relationship with Him. Honestly, the words righteous and righteousness have always thrown me just a little bit. It kinda sounds unattainable. So this is what I'm thinking about. How do I become the righteousness of God? Because if I'm reading this verse correctly, that's why Christ died for us. See - told ya this was a lot to think about. I want to understand this because it sounds pretty important if you ask me.

And that, my friends, is a day in this life.

A Day in the Life

Okey Dokey – how about one of my boring old posts about a day in my life. Honestly, I really wonder sometimes who cares. My momma would care I guess but she doesn’t read my blog. Anyway, here goes:
1. Outside my window . . . it is the most bee-u-ti-ful of days. The sun is bright, the trees are wildly glorious with color and the temperature could not be more perfect. Somebody say Amen!
2. I am reading . . . . Book #4 “Sunset” of the Sunrise Series by Karen Kingsbury. So who loves Karen Kingsbury’s books? I certainly do! This series brings to a close the saga of the Baxter family. I’ve been reading about them so long I feel like they are family. Yes, I know, they are fictional and I will have to deal with that. I also have downloaded to my Kindle the final installment of Nora Roberts’ Bride Quartet series, “Happily Ever After.” I’m saving it for the perfect reading moment. And, of course, from my favorite book of all, I’m still reading the book of Nehemiah. I just cannot get enough of this book. It is chock full of practical life lessons from this amazing man of the Old Testament. He was a political leader who sought God at every turn. Because of his obedience, he was able to accomplish amazing things during his lifetime.
3. Okay, this really doesn’t have anything to do with anything but I just loved the CMA Awards last night. I tell you that Carrie Underwood is ten kinds of pretty. As the co-host with Brad Paisley, she had many wardrobe changes and she wore one gorgeous gown after another. It was like this incredible fashion show along with awesome music all rolled into one. And who knew Gwyneth Paltrow could sing like that? Plus she had the good sense to sing a duet with the best singer/songwriter in country music and one of my personal favorites, Vince Gill. It was icing on the country music cake. I loved every minute of it . . . except maybe when Kid Rock sat down at that piano and tried to screech out a song. Besides who decided he was a country music singer anyway?
4. I am watching . . . well, Dancing with the Stars is just full of surprises this season is it not? Kurt Warner didn’t make the cut this week but golly what a gentlemen he is. So, we have Jennifer Grey, Brandy, Kyle Massey and the much-improved Bristol Palin. I’m keeping my opinions close to the vest but let’s just say the girls have it. Okay, if you remember from last year, D and I are huge “Undercover Boss” fans. What would Sunday night be without it and “Extreme Home Makeover.”
5. I am wearing . . . black pants, black turtleneck and a tan/black zebra print jacket. I just returned from the Challenged Child Brunch and Fashion Show which has inspired me on several levels. First, I feel sure we all need to have a great pair of boots even in Georgia because it will eventually get cold here and even if it doesn’t, I’m wearing my boots anyway. I’ve never seen as many cute pairs of boots as I’ve seen today. I’m also loving the bootie. Last year I must admit I had mixed emotions about the bootie but since I purchased a super cute pair at Target, I’m thinking they are the answer to my winter footwear dilemma. By the way, dear friends, accessories make your outfit. I could talk about this for hours but truth is truth and if you don’t pay attention to the details, you’re sunk in the fashion department. It’s worth the time to seek out cute and/or funky belts, necklaces, earrings, scarves, rings and watches. They will, I promise, change your life . . . . well at least your fashion life. And now I will step down off my accessorized soap box.
6. I am listening . . . to the new Zac Brown CD. G got it the day it came out and I swear the more I listen to it the better it gets. As you may know, Zac and his band are from our neck of the woods – Dahlonega and Gainesville. The lead guitar player graduated from Gainesville High. And by the way, they won the “New Artist of the Year” award at the CMAs last night. Way to go – they deserve it. I am contemplating the merits of breaking out the Christmas CDs. It’s a fine line – you don’t want to get them out too early for fear of them wearing out their welcome by the time Christmas rolls around. On the other hand, you really only listen to them once a year so why not? The jury is still out – I’ll let you know.
7. I am thinking . . . about my sweet daddy. Why does this never go away? He’s been gone almost 15 years and there is not a day goes by that I don’t think about him. I was telling G this morning in the car a story about him. G and E were only 7 and 10 when he went to be with Jesus so I feel I have an obligation to keep his memory alive with them. Oh, how I would love to be in the same room with him and my children. Someday . . .
8. Okay, let’s end on a happy note! :)) The Loft Outlet has everything in the store 30% off November 11 through the 14th – even their clearance items.
We have 44 days until Christmas. – are you ready? I found the perfect gift for our niece at the Mart on Tuesday (I love when that happens).
I’m having dinner with my “adopted sisters” (D’s aunts) and their husbands Sunday night and I cannot wait. I love them so much.
I do believe that is it for now.

The Second Day in the Life

Well, obviously this is a continuation from the previous post and by the way, a new day in this life. Just for an update, I am 27% through (according to the Kindle) the "Plantation" novel, the Dot Frank book I started last night. Seriously, I could hardly put it down. If sleep and an 8:00 hair appointment hadn't been a factor, I would still be reading.

Continuing on . . .
6. I am thinking about . . . what a wonderful man I married 26 years ago today. Now I will be the first to tell you that marriage is hard work and in my personal opinion, that's why so many fail. Folks just don't want to do the hard stuff, play through the pain and carry on. 1 Corinthians 7:28 says "those who marry will face many troubles in this life." So there you go. This should be no surprise. But can you think of a better reward in this life than sharing it with someone you love and the love of a family? Not me, no thank you. Yes, there will be troubles but there are many joys, lots of laughter and love that will carry you through.
I have learned a few things in 26 years and of course, I'll be glad to share:
I've learned (finally) to hold my tongue and not say the very first thing that comes to mind.
I've learned that I have a choice: to love or not to love. It is my decision every day. I choose love.
I've learned to forgive.
I've learned to appreciate the good and not dwell on the bad.
I've learned that laughing is much better than crying.
I've learned that accepting is much easier than trying to change.
I've learned that life is short and it's just best to think of others more than yourself.
I've learned that you really can survive the empty nest and enjoy it!
So hang in there! Commit to make your marriage the best it can be. Satan is alive and well and trying to steal, kill and destroy marriages everyday. Do Not let this happen! Stay strong!

7. I am remembering . . . a story about G. This week on the radio show I am featuring family favorites - choosing recipes that are favorites of my children. Today I chose my Macaroni and Cheese recipe for my boy. His favorite. Okay, long story but I'm getting to the point eventually. Yesterday on the show, B.J. was telling a story about something a child said to her at church and that got me thinking about something funny (now, not then) that G did when he was about 5 years old. It was one of his first Sunday's in "big" church. D was singing in the choir so I was sitting with the children on the back row (at least I was smart enough to do that) of the church. It was offertory prayer time and I closed my eyes (first mistake). When I opened them, G was gone. Gone. I began to panic until . . . everyone sat down, I looked down the aisle toward the front of the church and there was G. Rolling, yes rolling on his side down the aisle toward the pulpit. Just like he was rolling down a big hill on the way to the bottom. Not a care in the world - oblivious to his surroundings. Oh. My. Goodness. I will never forget it. I walked down that aisle like this was a common every day occurance, grabbed that child up by his arm, walked right back up that aisle, took my girl by the hand and kept right on walking out the back door of that sanctuary.

Memorial Day Weekend Recap and A Day in the Life

Well, how was every one's Memorial Day weekend? Mine was good. Sunday we gathered for the Annual J and J Foods' Company Picnic at Jaemor Farms and a fun time was had by all. Well, at least I had a good time. My favorite thing was the Best Bagger Contest. This is when an employee from each of the three stores (a competition at each store had already declared a winner) competes for the title of "J and J Foods Best Bagger." Now lest you think this is not an important sport, let me tell you what the winner receives: an all expense paid trip to Orlando in July to compete with other best baggers from all over the state to claim the title of "Georgia's Best Bagger." One of our very own won that title three years ago and got to travel to Las Vegas to vie for the national title. The state winner receives scholarship money. The national winner receives cash and a guest spot on the David Letterman show. So this is serious business. A precious young lady from the downtown Gainesville store won and is preparing to take on the competition in July. We'll be there cheering her on!

Then, yesterday I was all set to go to our town's Memorial Day parade when it came a downpour complete with lightening so they had to cancel it. Very sad. By noon, the sun was shining and it turned out to be a pretty day. The sweetest boy ever decided he wanted to spend the day with his momma and hey, what could I say . . . YES! We went to lunch and then wandered around over at the outlet mall for a little while. Can I just say that everyone who wasn't cooking out or on the lake was at the outlet mall. Not my first pick on where to spend Memorial Day but I would have gone anywhere that boy wanted to go. We came home and I cooked tilapia (for me) and catfish (for the boys). While we were eating we watched the PBS special, The National Memorial Day Concert filmed at the nation's Capitol. I laughed and I cried. It was so very good.

Okay, this started out to be one of those "Day in the Life" posts that I like to do periodically. So I'll do a little of that and finish it up tomorrow.

1. Outside my window . . . it is raining. It's been sunny most of the day which allowed my most handsome of a yard man (my son) to begin pressure washing our driveway. He has been one busy fella around here. Our backyard had taken on the look of Wild Kingdom and he has had his work cut out for him there. He had to take a break from that and decided to do the driveway. It's amazing the difference a little (or alot of) pressure washing makes.

2. I am reading . . . I just downloaded to my Kindle Dorothea Benton Frank's novel, "Plantation." I have read most of her books so when I received the notice from Amazon that she will be releasing her sequel to "Plantation" I realized I hadn't read the first one. So I think I'll start that tonight.

3. I am watching . . . Well, since the big television season has come to an end and the likes of "The Bachelorette" have begun, we've decided that we would continue watching tv, just shows we want to see. Which is why we are one disc away from finishing the first season of "Castle." We just got hooked on this show this season. This is the second season and our anal selves wanted to start at the beginning and get all the background on these characters. Richard Castle and Kate Beckett - we adore you. So our many thanks to Netflix who supplies us with our tv fix every three days. Between Netflix arrivals I "get" to watch the Braves which, since they just went from worst to first in the NL East standings, isn't so bad especially when John Smoltz is in the announcers booth. Love that Smoltzy.

4. I am wearing . . . Well, I could write endlessly about this for some reason. I found the CUTEST denim skirt at Marshall's the other night and it was $16.99 and I should have bought two because it is the cutest denim skirt ever. I told my good friend about it because I thought she needed one too. Because if I get something I think everyone should have one and they should know what a bargain it is. I don't know why. It is a sickness. So, I have on that denim skirt with a white eyelet top. Very cool and summery.

5. I am listening . . . My son has got me listening to three country artists and I rotate between their three CDs in my car. The first is Chris Young. He was the very first performer before Josh Turner who was before Alan Jackson at the concert. The other two are Eric Church and Jason Aldean. All fine voices. Not a fan of every single song but overall, good stuff. I also downloaded a few podcasts to my iphone. I had never even tried that until a few weeks ago and now I'm hooked. So far I've listened to Francis Chan and Andy Stanley's messages which are a little more than this feeble mind can absorb sometimes but I try.

More tomorrow . . .

This Day 2/8/10 in my Life

Well, today is one of those “Day in the Life” type posts that you may or may not find interesting. I did my last (and only) of these posts the first of December. So every once in a while I’ll give you a glimpse into my little corner of the world. Here goes:

Today . . .
I am thankful . . . that my son surprised us and came home for the weekend!! That boy just brings joy to my soul! He makes me laugh like crazy and I could just eat him with a spoon, I tell you. And I’m also thankful for another client who decided to book our services this week. Very thankful that God keeps sending them our way.
I am pondering . . . wisdom. It seems like God is keeping this subject right in the forefront of everything I’m studying, reading and hearing. I want so much to “get it!” But to get wisdom, I know I must pray and search for it. It is a hidden treasure that God holds for those who search diligently for it.
I am remembering . . . high school. As you remember, I’m now a member of the Facebook community, so I can go back and search for my Class of 1977 classmates. Since I haven’t lived where I went to high school for almost 25 years, some of these folks I haven’t seen since we moved or some, since we graduated. Some of them if their names were not beside their picture, I wouldn’t recognize them. But that’s the way it goes - they probably don’t recognize me either. I’ll tell you a secret: some of them look really old. Okay, please don’t state the obvious here.
I am listening . . . to Beloved. Beloved is an awesome ladies trio from Atlanta. I guess you would say their music is Southern gospel. Their music is varied so I’m not sure what exactly, but nonetheless they are great. I am so excited because in March I’m going with some girlfriends down to Atlanta for the weekend to attend their Ladies Retreat. Nothing but girls, glam (spa theme) and God. Fun. fun!
I am thinking . . . about how to redecorate E’s old bedroom. Right now, it has some bookcases in it and that’s it. And of course, we must change the pink walls. Oh, the pink walls. Thinking maybe of going with a neutral theme in this room - white, cream, wheat . . . hmm. I think I like this idea.
I am shopping . . . for Valentine’s Day gifts. I love, love Valentine’s Day. When the kids were little we made homemade Valentines and did some cool things. I’ll share this in another post this week.
I am cooking . . . oreo truffles for Valentine’s Day gifts. I’ll share this recipe later too. Totally a good thing.
I am reading . . . besides the two books in the previous posts, the book of Jeremiah (good stuff) and “The Last Song” by Nicholas Sparks on my Kindle. I want to read “The Last Song” before the movie comes out this spring. The movie was filmed on Tybee Island last summer and I can hardly wait to see it. But I gotta read the book first because I’m weird like that.
I am working . . . on two banquets for non-profits coming up in the next couple of months. Doing table décor/centerpieces for one and not sure what for the second. Also, got another big project in the works but that’s still top secret. Very soon.
I am looking forward to . . . getting away with the husband for a few days. Just the two of us with no responsibilities. Can you spell . . . b.l.i.s.s.?
I am wearing . . . jeans, white shirt, long black sweater/coat and black boots. Just got to tell you about this black sweater/coat because if I get a great bargain I seem to have to brag about it. Okay . . . . I took Mother to Belk’s the other day and thought I’d stroll around while she shopped. I spot this cute black sweater/coat across the store. Get this . . original price $88; ½ off = $44; additional 50% off = $22; $10 coupon = $12 for an $88 sweater. Yes!

So there you go! May you have a wonderful day in your life.

A Day in the Life

I thought it might be fun to do a "day in the life" post every once in awhile. It might be interesting or you may be bored to tears. Please let me know.

Today . . .

I am thankful for . . . a great Thanksgiving weekend. We had four consecutive days of fun. When is the last time that happened?

I am pondering . . . a great conversation I had yesterday with a heart friend. We hadn't seen each other in over two months and talked non-stop for almost four hours at Panera. She gave me alot to think about, offered her much-valued opinion about some upcoming projects that will involve both of us and just listened. I cherish her friendship.

I am praying . . . about alot actually. Some days wouldn't you just rather go back to bed? Praise God, we can be filled with hope. Because the world can sure fill you with alot of hopelessness and worry if you let it. Now, I'm not saying it is easy to let this go because . . . it's just not. But then you're reminded "in this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." (John 16:33) And then you have a friend who calls you and says "let me pray for you" and she says the exact words you need to hear . . . you cry, you rejoice, you love. And you just keep on 'keepin on' by faith.

I am remembering . . . my dad. Being the only child and a girl, I was joined at the hip with my dad. He worked so hard to give me everything he possibly could. At Christmas, and every day actually, I sure do miss you, Daddy.

I am listening . . . to Glory Revealed 2 and Harry Connick, Jr.'s Christmas CD. Both are amazing.

I am thinking . . . that I need to get to decorating this house. The realtor just called and wants to show it on Thursday. Lots of work really needs to get done by then.

I am shopping . . . for toys to take to an event on Thursday evening to benefit children and families in Atlanta who lost their homes due to the recent flooding. Get this - Target has Candy Land and Chutes and Ladders for $5. E and I played these two until we wore the board out and lost all the pieces. What a deal! But it occurred to me, do children still play these games? With the onslaught of video and computer games, are these board games obsolete? I'm just asking.

I am wearing . . . a poofy vest, scarf, turtleneck and jeans. My girlfriends talked me into buying this vest at the SteinMarts last year and I had my doubts. When you naturally possess your own "poof," if you know what I'm saying, it just didn't seem right to add to it. But, amazingly enough, I kinda like it. And E, my most honest critic, said it didn't make me look "additionally poofy." Was that a compliment?

I am cooking . . . chicken Parmesan for dinner. Actually, I have to be honest, it is left over. But I did cook it . . . a few nights ago. Thankfully, my husband does not mind leftovers. What a blessing.

I am reading . . . a little Christmas book by Debbie Macomber. I've heard about her books for years but have never read one. Apparently, she writes a Christmas book almost every year. I need a little diversion from the craziness of this time of year.

I am working . . . on the weddings coming up in less than two weeks. How did that happen so fast? Both are going to be quite beautiful but very different. One small, with family and friends in the groom's beautiful home. The second in a quaint little mountain church followed by a way cool reception at a local resort. I really need to double up on my vitamins - beginning today.

I am looking forward to . . . another awesome weekend. Family gathering on Friday night, going out with the girls on Saturday while the hubby goes to the SEC championship game in Atlanta. Words just cannot describe how excited he is about that, by the way. His only regret is that his son cannot go with him. G has finals the next week and just can't leave campus. I'm just glad that he chose school over SEC football - wow, that must have been a difficult choice.

I am . . . trying to concentrate on the true meaning of this season. When God became flesh. When He sent the Way, the Truth and the Life to this earth.

May you have a wonderful day in your life.
